Why do brilliant people settle for clichés when they could choose meaning? Why do some leaders, some organizations, some cities use the simple, human language of narrative and make it the basis of everything they say and do? Why do most settle for expensive, well-designed nonsense?
We chose meaning, too.
Our Story
We worked for large corporations. We worked in media, in advertising. We volunteered.
Everywhere, we fretted. A banal ad would set us off, or superficial homilies organized into a mission and a vision. The same three universal synonyms of “awesome” posing as values. Impenetrable strategic plans.
Story is an abused word but we considered it in its purity. How could narrative, the most powerful means of communication ever invented, help create a core business strategy? Not just marketing but as the foundation of everything?
We studied neuroscience, the effect of narrative on our brains, and we studied success — in business, in government, in place branding, in politics, in individual leadership.
How is Apple so disciplined and focused? Why is Austin so delightfully weird? What strategy did Iceland use to transform, in one year, from an economic disaster into the fastest-growing tourism market in the world? How do people like Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, Oprah Winfrey, and Sir Richard Branson carry their complications so lightly?
Each of these organizations, places, and leaders has what we call a master story. We created Story Engine to build one for you.
Let's find your story
